Rajnath Singh to chair 67th plenary session of NEC

Guwahati, July 8 (IBNS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will chair the 67th Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) to be held at the State Convention Centre in Shillong on July 9 and 10.

The plenary session will start from 2 pm on July 9.

It will be attended by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh, Governors and Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura; who are also members of the newly reconstituted NEC.

The Union Cabinet on June 13 took the decision that the NEC be brought under the direct control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The Union Home Minister is the ex-officio chairperson of the NEC and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister is its Vice Chairman.

The Governors and Chief Ministers of eight states of the North Eastern region are the members of the newly reconstituted NEC.

This is the first time that Rajnath Singh will attend the Plenary Session of NEC as its Chairman.

Various issues related to all round development of the North Eastern region will be discussed in the two day long plenary session.

The plenary will also discuss continuation of NEC schemes till March, 2020, which has already been approved by the Union cabinet.

The Centre had constituted the NEC as a statutory advisory body under the NEC Act to focus on the development of the North Eastern region.
