Raipur, May 17 (UNI) As many as 400 cases registered against tribals in Naxal-infested areas of Chhattisgarh, allegedly on flimsy ground during previous regime, are now being reviewed.

About 4,000 people have been affected by these cases.

The information was given at a meeting held here on Thursday under chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Cases registered against people belonging to Scheduled Tribe, residing in Naxal-affected areas of Chhattisgarh are being reviewed by the committee headed by Supreme Court retired judge Justice AK Patnaik.
First meeting of the committee was held recently.

About 400 cases that have directly affected 4,000 people are being reviewed. Many people are facing minor charges in these cases. The next meeting of the committee has been proposed on June 22.

Baghel instructed to gather information about under-trials who are in jail due to minor crimes. Appropriate action should be taken for release of the prisoners who remained confined to jail beyond the term specified under sections of crime, Baghel said.

He also instructed officials to take appropriate action for refund of money to the people who were duped by bogus chit fund companies.

During Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, the Congress had promised to review cases registered against the tribals in Naxal-infested areas and withdraw false cases. After formation of Congress government in the state, the Chief Minister constituted a high-level committee under the chairmanship of Supreme Court retired judge Justice AK Patnaik to review these cases. The state government will withdraw the cases on recommendations of the committee.
