Rains to continue in Bengal, child electrocuted in Kolkata

"Due to the deep and powerful depression over Jharkhand region, few districts of West Bengal, including Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Burdwan, will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in next 24 hours," Deputy Director General of Indian Meteorological Department-IMD ( Eastern zone), Gokul Chandra Debnath told IBNS.

"As the monsoon becomes active due to the depression, slight to moderate rainfall will lash Kolkata and its outskirts in next 24 to 48 hours. Then the situation would start improving here slowly," Debnath further said.

Due to scattered showers since Wednesday night, Kolkata's several parts were waterlogged.

The situation was brought normal on Thursday morning, after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) personnel opened the drainage system.

Meanwhile, a five-year-old child reportedly died of electrocution on Thursday afternoon at Masjidbari Lane area under Karaya Police Station limits in Kolkata.

According to reports, the child girl, Suhana Khatun, touched a illegally connected wire and was electrocuted.

She was rushed to Chittaranjan National Medical College nearby and declared brought dead there.

Police have started investigation into the case.

Earlier on Monday evening, a teenager was killed after being electrocuted, when he accidentally touched a road-side light post, in Kolkata's Bhawanipur area.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rainfall, the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has started releasing water from its several dams.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday urged the DVC not to release more than 50,000 cusecs of water to avoid flood situation in the state.
