Rahul mourns Telangana mishap

New Delhi, July 24 (IBNS) Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday condoled the loss of lives in accident in which a passenger train hit a school bus at an unmanned railway crossing in the Telangana.

"My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost young children in the terrible accident in #Medak," the Congress tweeted quoting Gandhi.

Gandhi said railway and road safety should be the priority.

"We must make rail and road safety a priority to ensure that such accidents do not take place and innocent lives are not lost," he said.

In one of the worst accidents at an unmanned level crossing, at least 18 school children were killed when their bus was hit by a train on Thursday morning in a village in Medak district of Telangana, said reports.

The bus driver was also killed in the accident.

"This was a very unfortunate incident," said Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda who had in his Rail Budget speech announced to do away with all unmanned level crossings in India.

He said he will make a statement on the incident at 3 PM in Parliament.

Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda informed the Lok Sabha about the accident which took place at an unmanned level crossing .

Reports said the driver was in haste to take the students to school when the incident occurred.

Reports said the bus was carrying students of Kakatiya School.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao condoled the death and assured an inquiry.
