Punjab protest against SC ruling in SYL case; Capt, Amarinder Singh resigns
He resigned after the Supreme Court declared Punjab's decision to terminate the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) water sharing accord with neighbouring states as unconstitutional.
The party MLAs too have sent their resignations to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.
Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted, "Have resigned from the Lok Sabha in protest of the SC verdict on SYL. The entire CLP stands with me as we continue our fight for Punjab."
He also posted his letter of resignation addressed to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Twitter.
He tweeted, "My message to people of Punjab! I''m committed to safeguarding Punjab's waters. Have done it before,will do it again.Just need your support!."
Punjab Assembly polls are due early in 2017.
The current Punjab government is formed by the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal in partnership with its regional and national ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing, the MP from Bathinda in Punjab, tweeted "For Punjab SYL is not just an emotive issue but a matter of survival as Punjab is an agrarian state. #AkalisAgainstSYL."
She also tweeted, "Our stand on the SYL issue is clear that we won't allow a single drop of water as it is the lifeline of our farmers."
Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and President Shiromani Akali Dal, tweeted, "We are ready for any kind of sacrifice to save our river waters but not even a single drop of water would be allowed to go out of Punjab."
In another tweet, he said, "@Akali_Dal_ has always opposed SYL canal & we will not let a single drop of water go out. This is my commitment to my state's farmers."
In October, Karnataka witnessed pandemonium in the state over apex court's ruling that the state must share the water of Cauvery river with neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
