Pune: A day after a massive fire hit vaccine-maker Serum Institute of India's Pune facility, company's CEO Adar Poonawalla on Friday assured the production of Covishield, the vaccine meant to fight against COVID-19, is on schedule and remains unaffected by the tragedy.

Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray visited Serum Institute on Friday.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference with Uddhav Thackeray by his side, Poonawalla said: "This was a brand new facility."

"No actual vaccine was actually being produced there, so there was no damage to any vaccine," he said.

He also tweeted: "Thank you Shri Uddhav Ji @CMOMaharashtra and @AUThackeray for visiting @SerumInstIndia and extending your help and support during this terrible crisis. As you have seen, the production of #COVISHIELD is on schedule and remains unaffected by this tragedy."

At least five people have been killed in the fire which broke out at an under-construction facility of India's biotechnology and pharmaceuticals company Serum Institute of India (SII) here on Thursday.
