President congratulates Nobel Peace award winner Kailash Satyarthi

In his message President has said, “The prize should be seen as recognition of the contributions of India’s vibrant civil society in addressing complex social problems such as child labour and the important role played by them in collaboration with the Government in the nation’s efforts to eliminate all forms of child labour in the country”.

Earlier, giving his first reaction on wnning Nobel Peace Prize, Kailash said, "It is a good news for India.  This is the reflection of the crores of Indian children. I am happy and I thank everyone." He will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Friday.

The Nobel Peace Prize 2014 was awarded jointly to Kailash Satyarthi  of India and Malala Yousafzay of Pakistan "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education".

Showing great personal courage, Kailash Satyarthi maintaining Gandhi’s tradition, has headed various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain. 

He has also contributed to the development of important international conventions on children’s rights.

Kailash Satyarthi has been active in the Indian movement against child labour since the 1990s.

So far his organization, “Bachpan Bachao Andolan”, has freed over 80,000 children from various forms of servitude and helped in successful re-integration, rehabilitation and education.
