Poll panel showcauses media houses for publishing surveys during polls
New Delhi, May 14 (UNI): Pointing out violation of provisions in the Representation of People Act, 1951, the Election Commission on Tuesday issued show cause notice to media houses, which published poll surveys predicting results of ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
The commission stated that it received complaints against three media houses on the violation of RP Act and issued notices to them.
"Election Commission has sought explanation from these media houses namely IANS India Pvt Ltd, Economic Times and Swaraj Mass Media as to why action should not be taken against them for violation of provision of section 126A of RP Act", said the commission's spokesperson.
The poll body has asked them to respond within 48 hours of the receipt of letter.
The three media houses published poll surveys, which they claimed was held by institutions and that calculations were by independent psephologists on May 12.
Based on the RP Act, the commission has banned publishing exit polls once polling starts till half an hour after polling ends.
In the seven phase Lok Sabha election, sixth phase were concluded and the last phase will be held on May 19.
The results will be declared on May 23.
