London, Mar 20 (IBNS): In a major development, fugitive jeweler Nirav Modi has been arrested in London city, officials said.

He is the main accused in the Rs. 13,000-crore PNB fraud case.

He will produced in a court soon. He has been on the run for several months now.

He was staying in London in recent times.

Modi was caught by the media in the UK on two occasions recently since the country put out an arrest warrant for him.

The arrest of the businessman took place at a time when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is taking all necessary steps to expedite the extradition process of Nirav Modi, sources said on Tuesday.

The billionaire diamond merchant was spotted by the media in London for the second time this month.

This happened just a day after the Westminster Magistrates Court in London issued an arrest warrant against the businessman, who is wanted in India.

Nirav Modi's response to the media's questions remained the same, that being: "No comments."

Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affair   Hardeep Singh Puri reacted to his arrest and posted: " You can run, but cannot hide from the country's #Chowkidar. As wheels of justice grind, after Vijay Mallya, fugitive Nirav Modi has been arrested in London. Clear sign that this is not the India which will allow economic offenders to loot the country & evade the long arm of law."

Jammu and Kashmir's ex-Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said: " It’s amusing to see the BJP falling over itself to credit the PM with the Nirav Modi arrest while completely ignoring the fact that it was The Telegraph of London & it’s correspondent who found Nirav Modi, not the PM & his agencies. "
