New Delhi, Oct 2 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid homage at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi to commemorate the 147th birth anniversary of the 'Father of the Nation.'

Modi performed parikrama at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.

"At Rajghat. Remembering Bapu's teachings and his impact on our nation," Modi tweeted.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information & Broadcasting M. Venkaiah Naidu also paid their tributes at Rajghat.

He also urged the nation to join in his ambitious cleanliness drive on this day as Gandhiji believed that ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness'.

"Join the movement to create a Swachha Bharat. Share images of your cleanliness initiatives on the App," he tweeted.

Mahatma, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869 in Porbandar (Gujarat) to Putlibai and Karamchand Gandhi, was a lawyer turned activist who almost single-handedly shaped India’s freedom struggle against the British Government.

His method of ‘Ahimsa’ (Non-Violence) against the oppressing force, catapulted him as a world leader.

After India gained freedom, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.

His birthday is also observed as International Day of Non-Violence.
