New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to his predecessor Rajiv Gandhi on his 33rd death anniversary.

In an X post, Modi wrote, "On his death anniversary, my tributes to our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji."

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress top leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi- the wife and son of Rajiv Gandhi respectively, also paid their tributes to the former Prime Minister.

The Congress leaders paid their tributes at Veer Bhumi in Delhi this morning.

Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of the country in 1984 following the death of his mother and immediate predecessor Indira Gandhi.

He was the youngest Prime Minister of the country at an age of 40.

He held his office till 1989. In 1991, while he was campaigning for the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Madras (now Chennai).

A woman, who was later identified as Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, bent down to touch his feet during the campaign when she detonated the RDX explosives which were kept under her dress.

Along with the former Prime Minister, 25 people were killed in the explosion.
