PM Modi has 'strong disapproval' of 'toppling of statues': MHA
New Delhi, Mar 7 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed 'strong disapproval' of 'toppling of statues', the Home Ministry said on Wednesday.
The Ministry said Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh have spoken over the issue of toppling of statues that have occurred in Tripura recently.
"Incidents of toppling of statues have been reported from certain parts of the country. MHA has taken serious note of such incidents of vandalism," the Ministry tweeted.
" PM Shri @narendramodi spoke to HM Shri @rajnathsingh in this regard and has expressed strong disapproval of such incidents," read another tweet.
The Ministry directed states to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
"MHA has asked the states that they must take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents," the Ministry tweeted.
"Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly death with and booked under relevant provisions of law," it said.
According to media reports, a Lenin's statue was vandalised and removed allegedly by BJP workers and supporters with the help of JCB in Belonia town on Monday.
There have also been reports of CPI-M party offices being vandalised. The CPI-M has also alleged that Tripura's new ruling party, BJP, ransacked homes of several CPI-M workers.
In a landslide victory in the northeastern state of Tripura, the BJP-IPFT alliance bagged 43 seats as opposed to Left's 16 seats.
