Piyush Goyal visits Rotterdam Port as India eyes wider access to European Markets

Amsterdam/IBNS: India is looking to leverage Europe’s largest port to expand its export footprint across the continent, with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visiting Rotterdam on Sunday as New Delhi seeks to unlock fresh trade opportunities through closer economic ties with the Netherlands and a proposed India-EU free trade agreement.

Goyal toured the Port of Rotterdam, accompanied by its chief executive, Boudewijn Siemons, to highlight the port’s strategic importance as a gateway for Indian goods entering European markets.

The visit comes as India seeks to strengthen its position in global trade, with efficient logistics, diversified supply chains and improved access to overseas markets emerging as key factors in boosting exports.

Rotterdam’s extensive shipping connections and distribution infrastructure could help Indian exporters reach buyers across Europe.

For sectors such as engineering goods, textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and processed products, reliable maritime links and efficient cargo handling can support smoother movement of goods and improve access to international markets.

The port’s importance is particularly relevant amid efforts to deepen trade relations between India and the European Union. A proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), if concluded and implemented, could create new opportunities for Indian businesses by reducing trade barriers and improving market access.

The scale of those opportunities, however, will depend on the final terms of the agreement, its implementation and the ability of Indian companies to meet European regulatory requirements and quality standards.

For India, closer cooperation with Dutch ports and logistics operators could complement its broader efforts to expand exports, connect domestic manufacturers with international buyers and make supply chains more resilient. Efficient logistics alone cannot guarantee export growth, but transport connectivity and reliable distribution networks remain important components of international competitiveness.

The Netherlands is an important European partner for India, with bilateral cooperation spanning trade, investment, technology, agriculture, water management and sustainable development. Rotterdam’s position within Europe's transport network gives the country particular significance for Indian businesses seeking to expand their presence across the continent.

During his visit, Goyal also interacted with members of the Indian community at a high-tea reception hosted by the Embassy of India at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. Approximately 70 participants, including business and professional representatives, attended the gathering.

The interaction highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening commercial, cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Indian professionals and entrepreneurs based in the Netherlands can also help facilitate business connections, provide insights into European markets and identify opportunities for investment and collaboration.

The minister’s programme included engagements with stakeholders in Rotterdam’s maritime and logistics sector, an interaction with the Indian community in Amsterdam and media engagement.

As India seeks to expand its role in global commerce, partnerships with major European logistics hubs could help connect its manufacturing and export ambitions with international markets.

The Netherlands, with its port infrastructure and established distribution networks, offers a potential channel for deeper economic cooperation as India and the European Union pursue closer trade ties.
