Pawar criticises Thackeray for allowing NIA investigation in Bhima-Koregaon case

Kolhapur/UNI: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Friday raised objections against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's decision to hand over the Bhima-Koregaon probe to the National  Investigating Agency (NIA).

Adressing a press conference here on Friday, Pawar said though the Chief Minister has full right to take a decision on this issue but it was 'improper' to take away this right by the central government by handing investigation of Bhima-Koregaon riot and Elgar Parishad to NIA and state government supporting the decision.

"The Jain community had registered a complaint against Home department officials for their investigation in Bhima-Koregaon and in this regard, I, too, have written to the state government," he said.

Meanwhile, state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, who is from NCP, on Thursday said that Mr Thackeray had overruled him.

"He overruled my proposal and granted consent to the NIA," Mr Deshmukh added.

On Jan 1, 2018, violence gripped bicentenary celebrations of Bhima Koregaon violence.

One person was killed while hundredswere injured in violence that spread to various pockets of Maharashtra. Subsequently, investigations were taken up by the erstwhile BJP-led government in Maharashtra, arresting several activists.

Early, this year, the Centre transferred the case from state government to the NIA.
