Pakistan seeks thorough probe in seizure of uranium in India
Pakistan has expressed “serious concern” over the seizure of uranium from unauthorized persons in India and called for a “thorough probe” in the case, reported Dawn. The incident, it said, highlighted the gaps in security mechanisms for nuclear material in India.
Earlier this week, an anti-terrorism unit of Indian police had arrested two persons who were trying to sell unprocessed uranium in the black market. The seized uranium, 2.1 kg in weight, is worth $2.9 million.
“Security of nuclear materials should be a top priority for all countries,” Zahid Hafeez Chaudhary, the spokesperson of Pakistan’s Foreign Office, was quoted as saying by Dawn.
“There is a need for a thorough investigation of the matter as to how such sizeable quantity of uranium could become available outside any state control and identify the gaps which made this possible,” he added.
He further claimed India’s record of safety and control of nuclear materials isn’t good. The recent seizure exposed gaps in its safety network.
He said India should report this incident to the IAEA’s Incident and Tracking Data Base mechanism as the uranium could have been trafficked to non-state or state actors or handed over to other rackets.
