Opposition's political activity ruthlessly repressed: Bengal Guv Dhankhar on attack on Nadda's convoy

In an unsparing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party, Dhankhar said, "The present scenario in the state of West Bengal is that any political activity by an opposition party is ruthlessly repressed and quelled with police assistance and the support of the ruling party.

"Such oppression of the Opposition from engaging in political activity climaxed yesterday when the political activity of the president of a national party was so intimidated, interrupted."

Dhankhar, who has reminded Banerjee of her constitutional obligation, said he has already sent a report to the central government over the incident.

Not only accusing the Trinamool government of curbing the Opposition's space, Dhankhar has also urged Banerjee to apologise for her remark on Nadda, which he and the BJP feels "distasteful" and slammed party MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Saugata Roy for their comments.

"I take a very serious note of the statement that emanated from the Honourable Chief Minister. How can a responsible Chief Minister believing in rule of law, believing in Constitution, subscribed to rich Bengali culture talked the way she did. I have urged the Honourable Chief Minister to reflect, think and care for a sense, grace of Bengali culture," he said.

Banerjee during her rally in downtown Kolkata on Thursday mocked Dhankhar saying, "They (BJP) have no other work. At times Home Minister is here, other times it's Chaddha, Nadda, Fadda, Bhaddha. When they have no audience, they call their workers to do nautanki."

Dhankhar also "cautioned" Banerjee, who heads the Trinamool, over her outsiders' remark while referring to the top BJP leaders.

"How can you call people of the country outsiders!" the Governor said.

On the second day of his West Bengal visit, Nadda met with violence, which has been allegedly carried out by the Trinamool activists, at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district.

In the videos shared by the saffron outfit, stones were seen thrown at the convoys and some activists were chasing the cars.

Multiple vehicles in the convoy, including the SUVs of Dilip Ghosh, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Mukul Roy and Anupam Hazra, were seriously damaged while few media cars also faced the attack.
