Several devotees were injured in a stampede-like situation during the annual chariot-pulling tradition of Hindu deity Lord Jagannath in the seaside town of Puri on Sunday.

One person was critically injured during the 'pulling of the chariot' ceremony, reported India Today.

The incident took place on Bada Danda, the Grand Road of Puri, where the grand procession was underway, the Indian news channel reported.

Witnesses told India Today that one person was critically injured in a mishap during the chariot pulling.

The mishap reportedly occurred during the pulling of Lord Balabhadra's chariot.

Emergency services rushed the injured people to hospitals for treatment.

The Rath Yatra is a major annual Hindu religious event.

A large number of devotees arrive in Puri every year to witness the event and even participate in the chariot-pulling tradition.
