No bill will affect India Bangladesh relations: Ministry of External Affairs
New Delhi/ IBNS: No Bill will effect the strong relationship between India and Bangladesh, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said today, adding that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 includes religious minorities of that country who were persecuted during the military and previous regimes and India recognises the efforts made by the Sheikh Hasina government to protect the minorities.
Kumar said, India and Bangladesh will continue to have a strong relationship and the cancellation of Bangladesh Foreign Minister's visit to India has been owing to a domestic issue in view of the country's Victory Day on Dec 16.
“The visit has been postponed due to domestic issues in Bangladesh in connection with their Victory Day on December 16. The speculation that it has something to do with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, passed by our Parliament on Wednesday, are unwarranted,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.
Yesterday, Bangladesh had issued a statement expressing its strong concerns over the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019, passed yesterday by Rajya Sabha.
“What they are saying in regards to torture on Hindus is unwarranted as well as untrue," Momen had told Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
“India is historically a tolerant country which believes in secularism [but] their historic position will be weakened if they deviate from that,” he had told reporters.
