NIA identifies car used in Pulwama attack; owner on the run

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IBNS): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) today said it had identified the vehicle that was used in the February 14 attack in Pulwama that killed 40 Indian soldiers.

Mentioning it as a "significant breakthrough", the NIA said the vehicle was a Maruti Ecco whose original owner was Md Jaleel Ahmed Haqani of Heaven colony, Anantnag. Haqani had bought the vehicle in 2011. It had then changed hands seven times before landing up with Sajjad Bhat of Bijbehara in the same district on February 4, 2019.

"A raid was conducted by NIA team at his (Sajjad Bhat's) house with the help of J&K Police on 23rd February. However, Sajjad was found not present in his house and thereafter has been evading arrest since then," the NIA said in a statement.

Sajjad, who was a student of Siraj-ulUloom, Shopain, has reportedly joined Jaish-e-Mohammad, the NIA said, and added that "a photograph  to this effect has also appeared in social media where Sajjad is seen holding weapons".

The NIA had taken over the Pulwama attack probe on February 20.
