Guwahati/IBNS: Along with other civil society groups, organisations, tribal bodies, political parties of Nagaland and other states of North East India, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has also demanded the repealing of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 from the North Eastern region.
Chorus for repealing AFSPA from the North Eastern region grows shriller following the killing of 14 civilians in Nagaland’s Mon district.
Bhupen Kumar Borah – president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee said that, only because of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), many people of North East have lost their lives.
"The recent incident took place in Nagaland’s Mon district is one of the biggest examples. Many people of the North Eastern region have lost their lives only because of AFSPA.
"So we Assam Pradesh Congress Committee demand the Union government that it (AFSPA) should be withdrawn immediately," Bhupen Borah said.
Earlier, the Nagaland cabinet had decided to write to the centre for repealing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from the state.
A special session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly will be held on Dec 20 to discuss the recent incident that took place in Mon district.
Apart from the Nagaland government and many civil society organizations, tribal bodies, students’ organizations of North East, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his party National People’s Party (NPP) also raised their voices against the AFSPA.
