New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the demise of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, who passed away Monday morning.

In a tweet, Modi wrote, "I had many interactions with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji when we served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. The close association continued and I always looked forward to hearing his views. His demise pains me. Condolences to his family and lakhs of supporters. Om Shanti."

In a separate tweet, the Prime Minister said, "Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji distinguished himself in UP and national politics. He was a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency. As Defence Minister, he worked for a stronger India. His Parliamentary interventions were insightful and emphasised on furthering national interest."

Mulayam, 82, was undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

Mulayam, the founder of the SP, which ruled Uttar Pradesh for years, served for three non-consecutive terms as the Chief Minister.

He has also served as the country's Defence Minister.

A long-time parliamentarian, Mulayam represented the constituency of Mainpuri in the Lok Sabha, and also earlier served as the MP from Azamgarh and Sambhal constituencies.
