Modiji endured false charges in silence for 19 years: Amit Shah reacting to Gujarat riots verdict

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi endured false charges in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots case silently for 19 years, his right-hand man and Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, reacting to a recent ruling by the Supreme Court.

In an interview with ANI, Shah said, "Modi ji endured false charges in silence for 19 years, nobody did a dharna."

Shah said this while taking a swipe at the Congress which has been holding protests against the Enforcement Directorate (ED)'s summoning of its top leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case.

The top court Friday ruled an appeal against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in connection with the Gujarat riots case was "devoid of merits", media reports said.

Quashing the appeal made by the wife of a Congress MP, who was killed in the riot, the top court upheld the exoneration of Modi, who was then the Gujarat Chief Minister, by a Special Investigation Team.

The SIT report in the 2002 riots cases did not find any prosecutable evidence against Modi and 61 others.

The infamous Gujarat riots of 2002 left hundreds of Muslims dead, injured and tortured and came as a blot in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule in the state.

The riots followed an incident of train burning in Godhra in which Hindus returning from Ayodhya were killed by a Muslim mob.
