Indian PM Narendra Modi recently unveiled a special postage stamp and a commemorative coin to mark the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological fountainhead of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

RSS claims it is not a political organisation, but it plays a major role in Indian politics due to its connection with the BJP.

Modi, who had once joined the RSS as a campaigner, unveiled a special Rs 100 coin on the occasion that depicts 'Bharat Mata' for the first time on an Indian currency.

The coin showed the image of Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra, accompanied by a lions. The Varada Mudra shows the offering posture with the palm directing outward. Three RSS sevaks or campaigners, dressed in their traditional uniforms, could be seen paying homage ot the Goddess.

Swayam sevaks are shown bowing before her in devotion and dedication, reported India Today, describing the coin.

The currency also features the national emblem on the other side of it.

The iconic coin, revealed during the special day, also bears the RSS motto "Rashtriya Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama," which translates to "Everything is dedicated to the nation, Everything is the nation's, Nothing is mine."

What did PM Modi say about the coin?

Narendra Modi said the depiction of the Bharat Mata on an Indian coin marked a 'historical significance'.

"For the first time in the history of independent India, the image of Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency, which marks a moment of great pride and historical significance," Modi was quoted as saying by India Today.

The RSS was established in 1925.
