Mizoram-Assam border dispute: Govts of Assam, Mizoram agree to eliminate tension, find lasting solutions

Aizawl/IBNS: The Governments of Assam and Mizoram on Thursday issued a Joint Statement and welcomed and agreed to take forward the initiatives taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs alongside their own to remove tensions prevailing around the inter-state borders and to find lasting solutions to the disputes through discussions.

In a meeting held in Aizawl today, the representatives of Government of Mizoram conveyed condolences for the loss of lives on July 26, 2021 and wished speedy recovery of those injured.

Both the State Governments agreed to maintain peace in the inter-State border areas and welcomed deployment of neutral forces by the Centre in this regard.

For this purpose, both the States shall not send their respective Forest and Police forces for patrolling, domination, enforcement or for fresh deployment to any of the areas where! confrontation and conflict has taken place between the Police forces of the two States during recent times.

This would include all such areas along the Assam - Mizoram border in the districts of Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar, Assam; Mamit and Kolasib districts, Mizoram.

Representatives of Governments of Assam and Mizoram agreed to take all necessary measures to promote, preserve and maintain peace and harmony amongst the people living in Assam and Mizoram, particularly in the border areas.

Assam cabinet ministers Atul Bora and Ashok Singhal as well as Mizoram Home minister Lalchamliana and Land Revenue and settlement minister Lalruatkima were present in the meeting.

Senior officials of both states, including Assam's Commissioner & Secretary of Border Protection & Development department GD Tripathi and Mizoram government's Home secretary Vanlalngathsaka attended the meeting .
