Mayawati Affidavit in SC: Elephant statues nothing to do with BSP party symbol

New Delhi, Apr 2 (UNI) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday filed a detailed affidavit in the Supreme Court and defended her decision with respect to the construction of her and her party symbol, elephant statues in Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati, in her petition, stated that the legislature had approved construction of her and her party symbol statues to respect the sentiment of people, who regarded and liked her as the first woman leader of Dalits.

She said, the SC had itself ruled that the expenditure approved by the legislature may be unwise but it could not be adjudicated by courts and should only be debated in the legislature.

She said, the apex court should not adjudicate the controversy over her statue issue.

The BSP leader said, the construction of elephant statues has nothing to do with her party symbol and it was is a mere coincidence.

She said the elephant statues also adorn Rashtrpati Bhawan and temples and are regarded as a welcome symbol in Indian mythology.

She filed the affidavit while complying with the top court order.
