Kolkata, Oct 19 (IBNS): Police on Wednesday lodged an FIR on suo motto basis, with attempt to murder charge against unknown person, in Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee's road accident case, officials said.

According to reports, the case has been lodged by Hooghly district police under several IPC sections, including 307 (Attempt to murder), 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy) and 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), and 8B section of National Higways Act (Mischief by injury to national highway).

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee was seriously injured in a car crash on Durgapur Expressway near Singur in Hooghly district on Tuesday afternoon.

His SUV reportedly overturned after hitting a broken down vehicle, parked beside the highway.

After being rescued, Banerjee was rushed to Kolkata and is being treated in Bellevue Clinic in a stable condition.

According to doctors, young leader of state's ruling party is out of danger and under 72 hours observation.

Following the incident, forensic experts and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials visited the scene and have started investigation into the matter.

Several persons, including the owner-driver of the other vehicle which was hit by Abhishek's car and his driver, were interrogated by the CID on Wednesday, according to reports.
