Major fire breaks out in Kolkata godown, firefighting ops underway

Kolkata, Nov 7 (IBNS): A massive fire broke out in a warehouse at Strand Road area near Armenian Ferry Ghat in Kolkata on Tuesday night, reports said.

According to reports, the fire was first noticed at around 8 pm.

As many as 24 fire tenders, local police and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel rushed to the scene and firemen are currently fighting to douse the blaze here.

West Bengal Fire minister Sovan Chatterjee and local councilor Smita Bakshi visited the scene.

"Several flammable objects, including LPG cylinders, diesel and other chemicals, were stored inside the godown," Sovan Chatterjee told IBNS.

"Firefighters are trying there best to bring the fire under control. Fire department will probe the matter and forensic tests of the burned godown will be done tomorrow," Chatterjee added.

Due to the incident, traffic at Strand Road was partly disrupted for hours.

No casualty has been reported so far.
