Mumbai, Feb 23 (IBNS) : The Shiv Sena continued maintain its lead ahead of the main rival BJP as counting of votes for Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were underway on Thursday.

According to the latest reports, the Sena is  leading in 77 seats, with the BJP ahead in 45, while the Congress trailing at third position is leading in 13 seats.

The trend of counting still leaves it unclear as to whether the Sena, which has been in control of the country's richest civic body for 20 years, will be able to attain absolute majority by captruing 114 of BMC's 227 seats.

. Votes are also being counted in nine other major municipalities in Maharashtra.

Though the Sena and BJP were allies since 1992 they are fought as main rivals in the civic polls.
