Lok Sabha Polls: Election campaign in Nagaland ends today
Kohima, Apr 9 (UNI) The election campaign for the lone Lok Sabha constituency of Nagaland and for the by-election to the Aonglenden Assembly (ST) constituency under Mokokchung district was ended at 1600 hours today, as the elections for both the seats will take place on April 11.
The Nagaland 17th Lok Sabha election for the Nagaland seat will see a four-corner contest with Indian National Congress’s (INC) nominee K L Chishi, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party nominee and Peoples Democratic Alliance candidate and sitting MP Tokheho Yepthomi, National People's Party candidate Hayithung Tungoe and Independent candidate Dr M M Thromwa Konyak.
The by-election to the Aonglenden Assembly constituency will see a straight fight between INC nominee Alemjongshi Longkumer and the People’s Democratic Alliance consensus candidate Sharingain Longkumer.
Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Abhijit Sinha informed that there are 12,09,613 electors in the state, with 6,13,409 men and 5,96,204 women, while the total service electors stands at 7,306 with 7,236 men and 70 women. For the Lok Sabha, 2,227 polling stations are estimated at 2,067 locations.
In the by-election of Aonglenden Assembly constituency, the total electors stands at 12,269 with 6,098 male and 6,171 female. There are 46 male service electors with no female voters in this category and there will be 16 polling stations at 15 locations for the by-election.
To the queries, CEO said expenditure involved in the election process was around Rs 50 to 60 crores for the entire state.
Nagaland Commissioner and Returning Officer Motsuthung Patton said, 850 village guards from Mon district, 300 vgs from Longleng and 200 vgs from Meluri would be used to substantiate the security personnel. For Aonglenden by-election, he said more companies were deployed packed by Central Armed Para-military Forces, while the security of the international border will be seen by Assam Rifles.
He further informed that election office has placed one helicopter and two ambulances on stand-by at Dimapur, where doctors and Para-medical staff were placed for any emergency.
