Lok Sabha Elections: Polling parties leave for booths

Guwahati, Apr 10 (IBNS): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday dispatched polling parties to their respective polling booths and beefed up security in the areas of five Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam which will go to election in the first phase on Apr 11.

Elections will be held in five Lok Sabha seats in Assam – Kaliabor, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Dibrugarh in the first phase.

A total of 41 candidates including two women and 12 Independent in the fray for the five parliamentary constituencies in Assam and 9,574 polling stations have been set up for smooth conduct of elections.

In the first phase polls, a total of 7,60,3458 voters, with 3,86,5334 males, 3,73,7970 females and 154 voters in Third Gender category will vote from five Lok Sabha seats to elect their representative.

On the other hand, a total of 180 companies of central paramilitary forces have been deployed for the first phase poll.

Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said that, entire security plan has put into place and all the security personnel have reached their places.

“Polling parties will be given security to reach the place and polling booths also being secured. We have also provided adequate security in the critical areas. We will ensure that, people to come out to vote without fear. In first phase, we have five constituencies and around 180 companies to be deployed at different places,” the Assam DGP said.

There are 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam and the state will go to polls for General Elections – 2019 in three phases on Apr 11, 18 and 23.
