Lok Sabha adjourned following ruckus over intolerance debate
The opposition alleged that the Narendra Modi government remained silent over the issue which assumed a huge proportion.
The Prime Minister was not present in the House as he is attending an international climate conference in Paris.
Initiating the debate, CPI(M) member Mohammad Salim said the country is deviating from its culture of tolerance and intolerance has created an "explosive situation" in the country.
"This is not a fascist country, it’s a democratic country... Intolerance is huge, present in every sector..We want a rational, secular India," Salim said.
He asked why was the Prime Minister silent over the issue.
Uproar broke in the House when Salim alleged that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said that for the first time in 800 years a Hindu has become India’s prime minister.
"I was quoting Rajnath Singh from a magazine, if he is denying then let him send a legal notice to the publication house," Salim said.
At this, the Home Minister demanded an apology from the CPI(M) leader and the BJP members raised a hue and cry engaging the opposition in an exchange of high decibel words.
As the situation refused to come to normal, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adourned the House for the time being.
