Hyderabad, Apr 16 (IBNS) : Vehicles went off the road and educational institutions remained closed as life was affected by a  shutdown, called by several opposition  parties and labour unions in Andhra Pradesh on Monday to protest against the Centre’s refusal to grant the state special category status, media reports said.

The shutdown,  called by the Pratyeka Hoda Vibhajana Hameela Sadhana Samithi- a people's forum- has the support of Left parties, YSR Congress Party and actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena party. The ruling Telugu Desam Party is not participating in it.

Leaders and activists of opposition parties staged protests in different parts of the state. No reports of untoward incidents, except for burning of a motorcycle in Tirupati, have been received so far.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who reviewed the situation with top police officials, directed them to ensure that peace prevailed in the stat

Protests by MPs from Andhra Pradesh over the special status issue caused a near washout of the Budget Session of Parliament in March and April.

The ruling Telugu Desam Party had withdrawn its ministers in the Union cabinet and walked out of the NDA after the BJP-led Government at the Centre, while all the MPs of the YSR Congress tendered their resignation on the last day of the Budget session over the issue
