Leftists are polluting Gurmehar Kaur's mind : Kiren Rijiju tells NDTV

New Delhi, Mar 1 (IBNS) : Union Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday said he did not accuse Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, but only said Leftists are polluting her mind.

"Gurmehar Kaur is a young girl. She has not seen the world.I was talking about leftists, not Ms Kaur," Rijiju told NDTV in an interview.

"The pollution of mind has been done by leftists," he said.

Rijiju said there is a "problem over Afzal Guru and anti-India slogans" as Leftists are backing the 2001 Parliament attack convict, who was hanged in 2013.

Rijiju admitted that he did not know the "whole thing" as he himself was away from social media being too busy, with election campaign and his tweet was based on the clip he was shown.

"I didn't know the whole thing; I was campaigning in a remote area," he said.

Referring to the recent violence in Delhi's Ramjas College, the Minister said there is a change in atmosphere on campuses.

He said ideological differences must be debated and there should be no violence.

The Minister's clarification came in response to a question on his tweet after Kaur, daughter of Kargil war martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, had posted a video clip that read, "Pakistand did not kill my dad, war did."

Kaur's post came as part of her campaign against the right wing students' body Akhil Bharaitya Vidyarthi Parishad, a frontal wing of the BJP.

The post drew sharp reactions from different quarters, particularly the BJP with Rijiju tweeting, "who is polluting this girl's mind ? A strong armed force prevents a war. India never attacked anyone, but a weak India was always invaded."

Kaur alleged that she was being trolled on social media and threatened with rape for her campaign.
