Kerala Muslim body calls for mourning as Modi takes charge as PM

Thiruvananthapuram, May 28 (UNI): Kerala Muslim Jamaath Council has called for observing a state-wide mourning on May 30, when Mr Narendra Modi would be sworn-in as Prime Minister for the second term.

Jamaat Council president A Pookkunju has called upon the believers to observe the mourning day in protest against the BJP coming back to power at the Centre for the second term.

Talking to newspersons in Alapuuxha on Saturday, Pookkunju said the second term of Narendra Modi-led Government will be harmful to the Muslim community.

However, his remarks courted a controversy after Kerala BJP President PS Sreedharan condemned his statement alleging that it was an anti national move.

Mr Sreedharan hoped that the enlightened and patriotic Muslims will reject the appeal by such extremist leaders aiming religious polarisation and destroying communal harmony.

Later, Pookkunju, who denied the statement, said the government must function without showing discrimination to anyone to gain confidence and trust of minorities.
