Srinagar, May 28 (UNI) A former militant was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the frontier district of Kupwara late Monday night, official sources said on Tuesday morning.

They said gunmen fired at Abdul Majid Shah , son of Ghulam Hassan Shah at village Babagund, Handwara, when he was leaving his home for offering prayers on Monday night.

However, nearby residents immediately rushed Shah to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Security forces immediately reached the area and conducted searches, they said adding the gunmen had managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

Shah, a fruit merchant, was affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and had surrendered several years ago.
