Kashmir: Encounter ensues between militants, security forces in Shopian

Srinagar, May 21 (UNI) A fierce encounter ensued between militants and security forces in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Tuesday.

Official sources said that following specific information about presence of militants, Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, Army and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Batmuran in Shopian on Tuesday afternoon.

When the security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding, fired with automatic weapons. “The security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter,” they said.

Additional security forces have been rushed and the area has been cordoned off to foil any attempts by militants to escape. “The exchange of fire was still going on when the reports last came in,” they added.
