Karur stampede: BJP’s Khushbu Sundar calls tragedy 'planned', slams DMK govt

Days after the stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur that killed 41 people and injured over 60, BJP leader Khushbu Sundar alleged the tragedy was “planned” and blamed the DMK government for negligence and poor crowd management.

Sundar accused Chief Minister MK Stalin of “mute inaction”, claiming authorities knew the kind of turnout Vijay would draw but still failed to provide an adequate venue.

“It seems like a created calamity,” she said.

Eyewitnesses described a power outage, crowd surge, and police lathi charge contributing to the chaos.

Vijay arrived nearly seven hours late, triggering a fresh wave of excitement that led to people climbing trees and rooftops.

BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan dismissed claims that Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is the BJP’s “B-team”, saying the party is a “P-team, the people’s team.”

Sources say BJP leaders have reached out to TVK after the incident, signalling possible future cooperation ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections.
