Bengaluru, May 4 (UNI) In an attempt to bring relief to School going children, the Karnataka Primary Education Department has issued a circular restricting the total weight of the bags carried to 10 per cent of the school going children.

Education Expert Dr Niranjana Aaradhya headed committee had recommended to the government in this regard during 2016-17 academic year and its recommendation will be brought to force from this academic year, according to a notification issued by the Karnataka Government.

The notification said for students studying in first and second standards the weight of the bag should not be more than 1.5 Kg and 2 Kg respectively. For students studying from third to fifth standard it should be 2 Kg to 3 Kg and for those studying in 6 to 8 standard it should be between 3 Kg to four Kg and for students studying in 9 and 10 standard it should be between four to 5 kg.

The notification also said that Schools should not burden children studying in first and second standard with home work and should observe ‘bagless day’ on every third Saturday of a month.

The notification comes in the wake of organisations complaining that Primary and High School students were made to carry school bags that were heavier than 8 kg and it had adversely affected the health of the students.
