Karnataka: Five die when two buildings, one under construction collapse in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, July 10 (UNI) Five people were crushed to death and four others injured when when two buildings, one under construction and another adjoining small apartment bloc, collapsed in Pulakeshi Nagar Police Station limits in the city today.

Police said on Wednesday that four bodies recovered were identified as Narayana (26), Nirmala (20), Anushka (3) and Shambhu Kumar. The body of the other middle-aged man, is yet to be identified. They were all construction workers working in the building.

Police and fire brigade sources said that the first building built four years ago collapsed in the wee hours after the earth below the basement shrunk and also affected the adjoining under construction building to collapse.

Bruhut Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Mayor Mukambika visited the spot and alleged that both the buildings, including constructed Apartment and under construction, were in violation of the norms set for multi-storied buildings in the State. The Engineers, Constructors responsible for the tragedy will be served notice and they will be made to pay the compensation to the next kin of the dead.

Meanwhile, BBMP has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to each of the bereaved family.

Rescue operation and clearing of debris is continuing by Fire Fighters and other agencies are continuing.
