Karnataka election to be held on May 12, counting on May 15
New Delhi, Mar 27 (IBNS): The Election Commission on Tuesday announced that the Karnataka election will be held in a single phase on May 12.
The counting of votes will take place on May 15.
Chief Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat said the notification for the state poll will be issued on Apr 17.
The last date for filing nomination by candidates has been scheduled on Apr 24.
The scrutiny of nomination files will be done by the EC on Apr 25.
The last date for withdrawal of candidate is Apr 27.
Rawat said the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) will be used in the election.
Photos of candidates will be present in the EVMs this time in the state election.
450 polling stations will be handled by women in 2018 state poll.
To ensure law and order during the poll, the Election Commission will deploy adequate central forces in the state.
The EC will also give protections to people belonging to the weaker sections of the society so that they can cast their votes.
Karnataka is one of the big states which will go to polls in 2018.
The state is one of the few bastions of the Congress in the country.
While the Congress is trying to return to power for the second consecutive term, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is aiming to wrest power in the state.
The battle of the state has turned into a tough contest between Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and former CM B.S. Yeddyurappa, who is the BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate.
The Congress present has 123 seats in a 225-member Assembly. The BJP, the principal opposition, is having 43 seats under its belt.
