Justice DY Chandrachud to become next CJI
New Delhi/IBNS/UNI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit Tuesday named Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor, media reports said.
CJI Lalit is set to retire Nov 8.
As per the procedure, the CJI had to name the senior most judge before he retires upon the seeking of the recommendation by the Union Minister of Law and Justice.
Justice Chandrachud, who is set to become the 50th CJI, will continue to serve the top post till Nov 10, 2024.
The Union Law Ministry had on Oct 7 written a letter to CJI Lalit requesting him to recommend his successor.
Justice Chandrachud completed his LLB (Bachelor in Law, Degree) from Delhi University.
He studied at Harvard University after receiving the prestigious Inlaks Scholarship. At Harvard, he completed his Masters in Law (LLM) and Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD).
Chandrachud practised as an advocate in the Supreme Court, besides the High Courts of Gujarat, Calcutta, Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi before becoming a judge of the Bombay High Court.
