J&K administration likely to commission two more grid stations in coming months
Srinagar/IBNS: The J&K government is likely to commission two more grid stations in Kashmir to augment the power supply capacity from the current 1,650 to 1,850 megawatts (MW) in the next two months.
With the onset of winter, the peak demand for power in Kashmir has gone up to 1,450 MW from 1,200 MW.
Sources said the “unregulated” use of heating gadgets with the arrival of cold leads to an abrupt rise in energy demand.
“However, the system constraints allowed the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) to supply 1,650 MW at a time,” they said.
Chief Engineer, KPDCL, Aijaz Ahmad Dar, said: “In the coming days with commissioning of two more grid stations at Lassipora and augmentation of the Mir Bazar grid station, we would be able to supply 1,850 MW; currently our distribution capacity is 1,650 MW.”
When asked about the department’s preparedness for winter, he said they have more or less completed all preparations.
“Our buffer poles, transformers stand in place, majority of the preventive maintenance of transmission lines have been completed, and branching cutting will be completed in a few days,” he said.
Last year, due to the commissioning of Alasteng and Bandipora grids, the supply increased up to 327 lakh units per day.
