Jayalalithaa to contest Radhakrishnan Nagar bypoll on June 27

Chennai, May 29 (IBNS) After returning as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will contest the bypoll for Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency on June 27 to be elected as a legislator and fulfil constitutional obligations.

The Election Commission on Tuesday announced bypoll to six assembly constituencies in five states, including Radhakrishnan Nagar

Jayalalithaa, the chief of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (AIADMK), who had to step down as Chief Minister in September last year following conviction by a Bengaluru in a corruption case was acquitted by the Karnataka High Court on May 11. She was sworn-in as Chief Minister once again on May 23 a day after O Panneerselvam resigned in her favour.

AIADMK's allies  Bharatiya Janata Party and (BJP) and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) also held discussions on Friday on the bypolls.

After the meeting BJP state President Tamizhisai Sounderrajan said that "preliminary discussions" on the issue of contesting the bypoll have taken place and a decision would be taken in due course.

AIADMK's P Vetrivel  resigned as MLA of Radhakrishnan Nagar on May 17 to ensure that the paty supremo can contest from the constituency.
