Jammu and Kashmir: Over 12 persons, including security personnel, injured in Shopian clashes

Srinagar, Mar 22 (UNI) Over 12 persons, including some security personnel, were injured in clashes on Friday in south Kashmir district of Shopian, where Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in a village this morning against militants.

People, mostly youths, hit the streets at Ratnipora and nearby villages after security forces launched CASO in village Gadapora following a tip off about the presence of militants, official sources said.

However, when the demonstrators, raising slogans, tried to move towards cordoned off area, security forces and state police personnel deployed there swung into action and resorted to lathicharge.

However, when it had no impact on stone-pelting demonstrators, security forces burst teargas shells and also fired pellets.

Over 12 persons, including security personnel were injured in the clashes. A policeman identified as Tariq Ahmad was also hit by a stone and was hospitalized.
A number of injured have received pellets wounds, official sources said.

Meanwhile, mobile internet service in Shopian was suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours.

Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was also off the roads in affected areas in the district.
