Jammu and Kashmir: Hizbul commander killed in Anantnag

Srinagar: Security forces shot dead a militant commander of Hizbul Mujahideen in an overnight gunfight in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Saturday.

The gun battle erupted at Rishipora in Anantnag on Friday evening during a cordon and a search operation following an input about the presence of militants in the area. Three soldiers and a civilian were injured in initial exchange of fire.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar said Hizbul commander Nisar Khanday was killed during the gunfight.

"Terrorist Commander of proscribed terror outfit HM Nisar Khanday killed. Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 01 AK 47 rifle recovered. Operation in progress, " IGP Kashmir was quoted in a police tweet.

Khanday was the second commander of Hizbul killed in a gun battle in last one month in Anantnag. On May 7, a top Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Ashraf Khan alias Ashraf Molvi and two of his associates were killed in the forests of famous tourist destination of Pahalgam.
