Jammu and Kashmir: Avalanche hits Ladakh’s Khardung La pass, five dies

Srinagar, Jan 18 (IBNS): At least five people died an equal number of persons were trapped under snow after an avalanche hit Ladakh’s Khardung La pass on Friday, reports said.

The Army, local police and State Disaster Response Force are conducting the rescue operation in the area. 

According to reports, some vehicles are also trapped under the snow.

“Rescue operation launched after civilians got buried under snow. It is believed that they were digging snow at Khardung La in Leh. Digging triggered a snow slide and civilians got buried. We are fearing that the civilians are trapped,” Deputy Commissioner Leh, Avny Lavasa was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessed heavy snowfall for the past couple of days.

Ex-Jammu and Kashmir CM condoles:

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti condoled the loss of the lives in the tragedy.

She tweeted: "Saddened to hear about the loss of lives because of the avalanche in Khardungla, Ladakh . Prayers for the families of the departed."
