Kolkata: After a gap of over three years, students' union election is currently underway in Kolkata's prestigious Jadavpur University (JU) on Wednesday.

The election, which started at 10 am, will be continued till evening in Jadavpur University's Jadavpur (main) and Salt Lake campuses.

Besides the students' wings of Left, extreme Left and TMC, BJP's student wing- Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)- is contesting for the first time in nine out of 13 seats in the Left dominated university.

JU authority said that the election was being conducted peacefully with no report of untoward incidents so far.

"Our Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das has urged the student to maintain peace during the polls which is being held after a gap of more than three years," a JU official said.

"We have tightened security inside the campus and deployed more security guards to avoid any type of tension," he added.

After 2017, citing several issues, West Bengal government had decided not to conduct students' union election in the university and it recently gave permission to the JU authority to conduct students' union election there.

However, the counting of the poll will be held on Thursday following which the results will be declared.
