New Delhi/UNI: Indians, cutting across political affiliations, are awaiting with 'bated breath' the approval of a proposal in the United Kingdom (UK) to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi on it's currency.

According to reports on Friday, the 151st birth anniversary of Father of Nation, besides the BJP-led NDA and the UPA constituents, other political parties like the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress arealso not 'averse' to the UK proposal.

Asked to comment on the proposal, a senior BJP leader on condition of anonymity said, "Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is a symbol of equality and humanity for the world, and synonymous to our freedom movement. Nothing would be great than the US proposal of giving recognition to his worldwide contribution."

The BJP leader's observations were echoed in the comments of an Aam Admi Party (AAP) activist, who refusing to disclose his identity said," Gandhiji's ideals of human society are very much needed to translate into realities at present troubled times."

The United Kingdom (UK) is considering a proposal for a new coin commemorating Mahatma Gandhi.

Meanwhile, reports of Gandhiji's birthday celebrations are pouring in from home and abroad with due solemnity.
