Indian-American medical negligence activist Kunal Saha says he was threatened by advocates for fighting cases of victims
Kolkata, Dec 21 (IBNS): A large group of lawyers have resorted to "harassing" People for Better Treatment (PBT) president Dr. Kunal Saha and threatened him with dire consequences if he continues "arguing cases on behalf of victims of medical negligence," the NRI activist alleged.
Kunal Saha, a prominent AIDS vaccine researcher at the Children's Hospital and Ohio State University at Columbus, Ohio, started his campaign to fight cases against medical negligence ever since his wife Anuradha died in a hospital and later formed PBT.
Saha continues appearing before the National, State and District consumer forums to argue cases on behalf of many alleged victims of medical negligence.
He had even challenged the West Bengal government in the Supreme Court for protecting doctors accused of medical negligence.
Saha, who won the highest ever compensation for medical negligence in India that caused his wife's death in 1998, came to India last week and appeared before the W.B. State Consumer Forum on Friday to argue for a victim, Abhijit Banik.
Banik's young wife died from alleged medical negligence following delivery of a child.
However, the bench presided by state forum president Justice Ishwar Chandra Das refused to allow Saha from arguing on behalf of the victim.
Not limiting to this, a large group of lawyers also started to shout against Saha and PBT, he claimed.
He was even chased out of the courtroom and threatened.
Finally, police escorted Saha from the court premise.
He lodged a formal complaint with the local police station seeking later.
A thorough investigation has been initiated in the matter.
