India to strike a 10-year deal with Iran for Chabahar Port today: Report

| @indiablooms | May 13, 2024, at 06:11 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: In a big diplomatic outreach to Tehran, India is in all likelihood to strike a 10-year deal with Iran for the management of the Chabahar Port on Monday, a report by Economic Times said.

Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is likely to travel to Iran on Monday.

However, the central government hasn't confirmed the news yet.

The port is located in the southeastern coast of Iran along the Gulf of Oman.

As per a report by Moneycontrol, there are plans to link Chabahar with the North South Transport Corridor that connects India and Russia through Iran.

It will give India access to the Central Asian region.

Earlier, a pact between India and Iran was signed in 2016 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Tehran in 2016.

The matter also popped up during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's latest visit to Iran in January 2024.

Jaishankar claimed the 10-year deal between India and Iran will pave the way for more investments and linkages from the sea port, Moneycontrol reported.
